Free Family Tree Maker With No Sign-Up

Search for a "free family tree maker" and you'll find plenty of results — but click into most of them and you'll hit an account wall before you've placed a single person. You're asked for an email, sometimes a credit card "just to verify," and the tree you build is often capped at a handful of people until you upgrade. That's a reasonable business model for a company running servers for millions of users. It's just not what most people mean when they search for "free."

What "no sign-up" actually looks like

Bloomsly takes a different approach because it works differently under the hood: there's no server storing your family tree, so there's nothing that requires an account to protect. You can:

  • Open the app and start building immediately — add yourself, your parents, and work outward. No email, no password, no "start your free trial."
  • Import an existing tree from a GEDCOM file exported by Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, or similar — see our GEDCOM viewer guide for how.
  • Add as many people as you actually have — there's no artificial cap designed to nudge you toward a paid tier.
  • Export a full backup as a JSON file, or a 2560×1440 PNG snapshot to share, any time.

The one place Bloomsly does ask for a free account is if you want to send feedback or make a donation — both entirely optional, and neither required to use the tree itself.

Why this is possible at no cost

Most family tree services charge because they're storing your data on their servers indefinitely, which costs money at scale. Bloomsly instead saves your tree locally, in your own browser — the same way a word processor might autosave a document to your hard drive. That single design decision is what removes the need for accounts, subscriptions, and storage limits. It does mean your tree lives on the device you built it on, so it's worth using the Export button to keep a backup file, especially for a tree you've put real time into.

What you get beyond "just free"

A free tool that's also thin isn't much of a win. Once you're building, Bloomsly gives you a few things most family tree makers don't:

  • A real 3D layout — every branch (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins) gets its own space instead of competing for room on a flat page. See what a 3D family tree actually changes.
  • Relationship naming — click any two people and see exactly how they're related, with the connecting path drawn between them.
  • Collaboration without a shared account — share a link with a role (Viewer, Contributor, or Co-author); contributors' changes come back to you as suggestions to approve, like edits in a shared document.
  • A time machine — scrub a year slider and watch the family exist across history, generation by generation.

The honest tradeoff: because there's no central server, your tree doesn't automatically sync between your phone and your laptop the way a paid, account-based service would. Export a backup file if you switch devices, or use the share feature to move a copy across. For a tool with no subscription and nothing to leak in a data breach, most people find that a fair trade.
